CVR (Conversion Rate)
CVR (Conversion Rate) is the percentage of ad clicks or website visitors that complete a desired goal action — a purchase, form submission, phone call, or sign-up. CVR is calculated as conversions divided by clicks (or sessions) multiplied by 100, and it is one of the most fundamental efficiency metrics in paid media: a campaign with a low cost per click but a poor CVR can still be unprofitable, while a higher-CPC campaign with strong CVR may deliver superior return on ad spend. CVR is influenced by ad-to-landing-page relevance, page load speed, trust signals, offer strength, and audience quality. In Google Ads, CVR is the conversion signal that powers all Smart Bidding strategies — Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, and Maximize Conversion Value all require conversion tracking to function, and the algorithm's ability to optimize depends directly on consistent, accurate conversion data. Industry-average CVR varies dramatically by vertical: ecommerce typically ranges 2–5%, lead generation for home services can reach 10–20%, and brand search campaigns often exceed 30%. Improving CVR through landing page optimization, audience refinement, and offer testing typically yields higher marginal returns than reducing CPC, because CVR improvements compound across all traffic sources rather than just lowering the cost of a single channel.
